March to August, by variety

Mango Namaste — Indian mangoes: cultivar and season | mangonamaste.com

India's mango season runs from March to August, but no single date fits every fruit: each of the main cultivars holds its own window of three to four months inside that span. As for the sweetest variety, the honest answer is numerical — ripe flesh of any sound fruit reads 14-18 °Brix, and ripeness, not the name on the box, decides where in that range you land.

01

The calendar

India's season runs March to August as a relay of cultivar windows: Alphonso 3-6, Kesar 5-7, Dasheri and Chaunsa 6-8. June and July carry the widest overlap.

02

The sweetness question

Ripe flesh measures 14-18 °Brix and unripe 8-10, whatever the variety. With no verified per-variety figures, the practical answer is full ripeness inside the window.

03

The handling

Ripen 3-7 days at 18-24 °C, keep ripe fruit 4-6 days at room temperature or up to 10 at 10-13 °C, and never hold ripe mangoes below 10 °C.

Variety sets the calendar; ripeness sets the sweetness.
Below 10 °C a ripe mango is not being kept — it is being injured.

When is mango season in India?

Taken across cultivars, the season runs from March to August, and each major variety holds its own window of three to four months inside it.

The season is a relay, not a single date. Alphonso opens it in March — month 3 — and runs to June, the only one of the four fixed windows to start before May. Kesar takes the baton in May and holds it to July.

June is the handover month and the richest for choice: Dasheri and Chaunsa both open just as Alphonso closes, so through June and July three to four cultivar windows run at the same time.

August is the finish. Only Dasheri and Chaunsa remain, and when both close at the end of month 8 the main season is over; outside March to August the windows printed here simply do not apply.

  • Alphonso: March to June (months 3-6)
  • Kesar: May to July (months 5-7)
  • Dasheri: June to August (months 6-8)
  • Chaunsa: June to August (months 6-8)

Questions readers actually ask

So which mango is actually the sweetest?
On verified figures, none can be named. Ripe flesh of any sound fruit measures 14-18 °Brix and unripe 8-10 — and no per-variety Brix table exists in this reference's sources, so ripeness is the lever you control.
Can I speed-ripen mangoes in the fridge?
No — the fridge is the failure mode, not the shortcut. Below 10 °C ripe mangoes suffer chilling injury, while hard fruit needs 18-24 °C for its 3-7 day ripening run.
Why did my mango pit on the skin and soften in patches?
Those are the two named signs of chilling injury from storage below 10 °C. The damage does not reverse; ripen at 18-24 °C and hold ripe fruit at 10-13 °C instead.
How long does cut mango keep?
Three to five days at 4 °C in the fridge. Frozen at -18 °C, cut flesh keeps 8-12 months.
